Position Descriptions: POSITION: GenBank Biologist
It’s 2 am. You type the name of your favorite gene into Genbank and are rewarded with information—sequence, references, related genes. You are intrigued by the countless possibilities for new experiments, but part of you longs for a different career away from the bench and 2 am dates with your computer.
If you see yourself in this scenario, consider experiencing life on the other side of a Genbank query. Computercraft is seeking new additions to its team of creative and dedicated scientists who have supported GenBank since 1991. Molecular biologists who are just completing a post-doc are especially encouraged to apply.
As a Genbank biologist you would work together with professionals at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD.
Your responsibilities would include: creating complete and accurate Genbank records from the sequence data and annotation submitted by individual investigators and large-scale sequencing projects and helping to administer and maintain GenBank.
Requirements:
• A Ph.D. in molecular biology or a related field
• Extensive laboratory experience in molecular biology
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• An aptitude for DNA sequence analysis (experience with DNA sequence analysis software is a plus)
• The ability to work as part of a team
• A strong desire to support public scientific databases such as Genbank
• A detail-oriented outlook coupled with a love for puzzle and problem solving

This groundbreaking project is aimed to assist scientists discover associations between genetic variants and risks for disease.
Responsibilities will include genotype analysis pipeline development, data reformatting, data quality control, management of a relational database, data curation, and communication with external investigators. This is an opportunity to be involved in the development of a new resource with the potential to revolutionize human genetic disease research.
Requirements:
• Ph.D. or M.S. or sufficient experience in genetic linkage analysis and/or allelic association studies
• Scripting experience in Perl
• Relational database experience (SQL)
• Linux/UNIX experience
• Ability to work with a team in a production environment and communicate well with NCBI biologists and programmers as well as external scientists
• Strong interest in contributing to the development of public database resources
Other Desirable Experience:
• Human genetics
• Haplotypes
• Analysis of structural variations
• Copy number variation
• Linkage disequilibrium
• QA filtering of genotype data (HWE, non-Mendelian segregation)
• PedCheck, Aspex, MERLIN, CRIMAP

POSITION: dbSNP Curator
The Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms database (dbSNP) serves as a central repository for both single base nucleotide substitutions and short deletion and insertion polymorphisms. Computercraft seeks a biologist with significant knowledge in life sciences to help curate dbSNP records, process submissions, and perform data analyst tasks. Candidates should also have the ability to rapidly develop applications to process data into database and CGI to generate reports.
The individual will work onsite at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD. Our scientists work with genomic experts at NIH's National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to create and enhance a suite of databases and tools available to researchers worldwide.
Requirements:
• PhD in molecular biology or highly related field; additional post-doctoral laboratory experience is desired
• Technical familiarity with sequence analysis and bioinformatics softwares
• Relational database and SQL programming experience
• Programming experience (Perl, Python, or C++)
• Teamwork interaction, excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as organizational skills are essential
• Ideal candidate will have experience in genotyping and QC processing

POSITION: Metagenome Bioinformatics Scientist
Computercraft seeks a highly motivated individual to curate environmental sample sequences in GenBank and other related resources at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). These samples include sequences from more traditional site-directed environmental sample studies (rRNAs, and other loci) as well as more recent ‘metagenomics’ projects involving undirected whole-environment shotgun sequencing strategies.
The NCBI directed project aims to make these data more useful to the relevant research communities. The successful candidate will be in direct contact with all the current research and researchers in this field. Specifically, the individual will work with the external scientific groups that generate and study environmental sequence data, and with the various groups at the NCBI that are involved in the submission, classification and use of these sequences.

• Design a broad strategy to represent and manipulate environmental sequence data (site-specific and metagenomic).
• Curate the nomenclature and classification of environmental sequences in the NCBI Taxonomy Database.
• Assist in the development of submission tools, annotation guidelines, analysis and statistical software tools for environmental sequences.
• Develop resources at the NCBI and contacts with the research community to best support these efforts.
Requirements:
• Ph.D. in biology or related field
• Extensive experience with metagenome/environmental sample studies
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
