Organization Description:
Human Genome Sciences (HGS) is located in the Washington, DC metro area, and was founded in 1992 with the goal of creating a global biopharmaceutical company to discover, develop, manufacture, and market gene-based drugs to address unmet medical needs. We have a significant product pipeline with seven products in clinical development, including drugs to treat hepatitis C, lupus and other autoimmune diseases, anthrax exposure, and cancer. In recent years, we have progressed toward becoming a late stage development and commercialization company, and we have recently started Phase 3 trials for three of our key development programs.

HGS is developing an innovative new treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which would be the first new treatment for lupus in nearly 40 years. This product, belimumab, is being co-developed and commercialized with Glaxo SmithKline. We are also developing a long-acting interferon alpha, Albuferon, for Hepatitis C, along with Novartis. HGS has also been awarded a two-phase contract with US government to supply them with ABthrax, a monoclonal antibody treatment for anthrax, for the Strategic National Stockpile, which we expect to deliver in 2008.

At HGS, people are the key to our success. We share a passion for scientific and business innovation, creating unique opportunities to contribute to the commercialization phase of our products. At HGS, you will have opportunities to learn and grow, interacting with talent of the highest caliber, and you will be supported by a culture committed to employee and leadership development. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package. HGS is an Equal Opportunity Employer EOE/AA M/F/D/V

Position Descriptions:
Biostatistician

The United States Military Cancer Institute (USMCI), a component of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences of the Department of Defense, is seeking applications for two positions in biostatistics.

There are unique and invaluable research resources in the Department of Defense (DoD) health care system. These include the military health databases covering millions of medical care beneficiaries, such as the cancer registry data and clinical care data. Working with the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, NCI, we are currently linking different health databases, which will be a tremendous resource for research on cancer and other outcomes. The DoD also has a serum bank containing millions of samples collected prior to cancer diagnosis, which provides unique opportunity in cancer research. In addition, there are strong research programs in prostate, breast, and gynecologic cancers in the DoD system.

The successful applicant will assist in the development of biomedical research protocols and projects, manipulate databases including large complex data sets, perform statistical analyses throughout the courses of studies, and provide statistical consultation as needed. He/she will also provide relevant statistical and project status updates to research staff, prepare reports for presentations and publications, and help interpret and disseminate research results.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position include excellent knowledge and ability of using complex biostatistical research methods; advanced knowledge in computer programming with experience in advanced multivariate statistical methods; knowledge of statistical and data management software including SAS, SPSS, ACCESS, and Excel; and excellent written communication skills.

Minimum Education: PhD or Master's degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology or a related scientific discipline.

Minimum Experience: At least 2 years of working experience in statistical analysis is needed for a doctoral level person and at least 4 years of the experience is needed for a master-level person.

US citizenship is required.

Epidemiologist

The Center for Prostate Disease Research is currently looking for an Epidemiologist.

Responsibilities are to provide epidemiological, biostatistical and study design support for specific prostate cancer research projects under the CPDR Multi Center National Database; provide quality assessment and oversight of the database to include query management; and assist fellow researchers regarding epidemiological interpretations.

Initiates, designs, implements, and evaluates epidemiological studies supporting prostate cancer research. Provides quality assessment of the database and maintains quality control of data input. Identifies socio-demographic and geographic correlation of prostate cancer disease progression and outcomes and determines their relationships to the biology, molecular mechanisms and pathogenesis of the disease. Designs and implements retrospective studies. Provides consultation regarding study design and necessary statistical analysis to include multivariate methods. This includes advising on designing studies, determining safety and effectiveness of new treatments, analyzing statistics and epidemiological interpretations of the research. Assists fellow researchers as needed regarding epidemiological methodology and procedures. Prepares original research articles to be submitted as manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals as first and senior author. Prepares competitive grant proposals to obtain funding for prospective research projects. Completes other projects as needed.

Knowledge and ability to use and teach complex epidemiologic research methods in a bio-medical setting to assess the risk for prostate cancer onset and progression; and asses the impact of prostate cancer screening and therapeutic modalities. Incumbent should have experience with advanced multivariate statistical methods; knowledge of statistical and mathematical software including SAS, SPlus, MINITAB, and BMDP; excellent written and oral communication skills. Incumbent is expected to work in a large multi-disciplinary bio-medical research setting involving urologists, cancer biologists, pathologists and medical information experts.
