Paging And Signal Service

[Home] [Up] [Handbook Contents]

Physicians and other key patient care staff who cannot be reached at their regular telephone numbers may be paged.

Voice Page

The page is announced from the central telephone switchboard and may be heard throughout most of the Clinical Center.

  • Placing calls: Dial 301-496-1211. The page operator can be reached 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Give the operator the name of the person to be paged and the telephone 5-digit extension to be called. Only names are announced over the voice page system.

  • Receiving calls: When you are paged, go to the nearest telephone and dial 301-496-1211. The page operator will give you the telephone number to call.

Radio Page (Beeper)

Whenever possible the radio paging system should be used rather than the voice page. One advantage of this is the system's ability to locate individuals even though they may be in an area, on or off the reservation, where the voice page cannot be heard. Another advantage is the reduction of noise in the Clinical Center.

Physicians who are assigned pagers shall not request the signal operator not to page them.

If the pager number is known, callers can signal the person themselves from any phone; this procedure is more expedient.

  • Placing calls: The signal operator (301-496-1211) has a listing of the pager numbers of most of the individuals who are frequently paged, identified either by name or area of responsibility. This pager system is limited to the NIH campus.  However, each telephone on the NIH reservation is capable of sending a signal to any personal pager. Individual pagers are assigned a 7-digit number such as 104-1234. To signal this number dial 104, then after the tone dial 1234. After the second tone hang up. Some pagers have the capability of displaying the telephone number to be called. For additional information, call 301-496-1833.

Page for Outside Calls

To contact you from off the NIH reservation, the caller should dial 301-496-1211. The page operator will put the caller on hold and voice page you, requesting that you call on a 402- call-back number. When you call the page operator, the call will be put through to the extension you give. Please try to call as soon as possible after you are paged.

Pager Repair/Malfunction

Please bring your pager to room B1A-24, Pager/Electronic Repair Shop, or call 301-496-1833 for information.
