NIH Fellows Handbook

Post-Fellowship Employment Opportunities

[Home] [Up] [Handbook Contents]

Two areas of immediate concern to Fellows completing their training at the NIH are the need for assistance in disseminating their curriculum vitaes (CVs) and the need to identify possible positions. The Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) has developed electronic services in both these areas.

NIH Research and Training Opportunities

The Office of Intramural Training & Education Web site includes an NIH Staff Only page for Postdoctoral and Clinical Fellows seeking employment opportunities outside the NIH. This site provides information on Current Outside Openings that are available in academia as well as in commercial biomedical and pharmaceutical laboratories. It also provides links to other employment Web resources, such as:

  • HUM-MOLGEN Positions in Bioscience and Medicine

  • The Chronicle of Higher Education

  • Academic Physician and Scientist (AAMC)

  • Science, New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, Cell, Neuron, and Immunity

  • Federal Job Openings

  • Bio.com Biotech Industry Job Postings

  • McGill University Job Listings

  • Community of Science Expertise Database
To disseminate Fellows' CVs, a collaboration has been established between the NIH and the Community of Science (COS) in building an NIH database of Postdoctoral and Clinical Fellows who are looking for employment opportunities. The COS was created in 1988 to stimulate wider collaboration between the corporate and academic research communities. It's database includes over 72,000 researcher profiles from more than 200 major research universities (including NIH) and other research and development organizations in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and continental Europe. In addition to being used by academia, the COS database is sold to subscribers at more than 100 major international corporations and funding sponsors who use it to identify consultants and collaborators.

NIH Fellows who submit their CVs will be identified as individuals who are completing their training and are seeking employment opportunities. The CVs will be made available on a field searching interface to potential employers in the "edu" (academic), "com" (company), "org" (organizations and foundations), and "gov" (government) Internet domains.
