The NIH Recreation and Welfare Association (R&W) is an organization formed in 1945 to promote recreational, educational, social and welfare activities for employees and Clinical Center patients.

Among the many services are:

  • Barber Shop and Beauty Salon used by patients, employees, and visitors of NIH. The hours of operation for the barber shop are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday, and is located in Building 10, Room B1C17. To make an appointment call 301-496-3019. The beauty shop is opened from 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday, and is located in Building 10, Room B1C24. To make an appointment, call 301-496-2765.

    Note: Leave must be approved for employees for appointments during work hours.

  • Gift Shops offering a variety of gifts and services, including discount dry cleaning, photoprocessing, business cards, greeting cards, and movie rental. Locations:

  • Fitness Centers providing members an opportunity to be involved in a total health maintenance program focused on cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility. The central theme is prevention of health problems by improving employee physical fitness.

  • NIH Florists' Workshop located in the first floor lobby of Building 10, provides full service FTD and Teleflora World Wide Delivery. Proceeds benefit the NIH Friends of the Clinical Center. For ordering and information, call 301-402-1052.

  • Activities Center offers discount tickets for a variety of events, including theater, Kennedy Center, Patriot Center, USAir Arena, Bullets, Capitals, Orioles, Ringling Brothers Circus, and many others. In addition, discount services are offered for rental cars, movie tickets, Walt Disney World, and more. 24 hour hotline for information on current and upcoming events 301-496-6598.   • Recreational Clubs are available, such as softball, martial arts, sailing, and 29 more. Call 301-496-4600 for further information.

  • Trips and short excursions are available which include tubing, outlet shopping in Reading, PA, Atlantic City trips, cruises and much more.

Many special events are sponsored by the R&W to assist in raising funds for NIH-related charitable causes, such as the Camp Fantastic "Barbecue," the Friends of the Clinical Center "Great Pumpkin Chase," and the Children's Inn's "Back to Bethesda."

An R&W Newsletter is published monthly and distributed desk-to-desk that lists current activities, trips tickets and club fun.
