Postbac Weekly Drop-in Discussion Group

Discussion Group/Brown Bag: Personal Development

Feb 13, 2018

Speaker(s): Annie Scheiner, LCMFT, OITE Wellness Advisor
This event is recommended for: Postbacs.

Your NIH postbac can be an exciting time of personal growth and development. It can also be a frustrating and difficult time -- and most likely, it is simultaneously challenging and rewarding much of the time. Worries about integrating work and life, making school/career decisions, finding time to address career development needs, and interpersonal issues with mentors (and others) can contribute to feelings of being overwhelmed and disconnected. A common element of navigating the challenges of life at NIH is finding community, using resources, and developing your problem solving, assertiveness, stress management, and self-care skills.

The OITE is pleased to announce a weekly drop-in discussion group to assist NIH postbacs in developing the resilience and problem-solving skills needed to thrive at NIH and beyond. The group will provide a confidential space for NIH postbacs to discuss life, work, school and career-related issues in a proactive and positive environment. The group will be facilitated by Annie Scheiner, LCMFT, OITE Wellness Advisor and will meet weekly on Tuesdays from 3:00 - 4:00 pm in the OITE conference room. You must register in advance, and you may choose to attend one session or multiple sessions. Registration will open one week prior to each session, and is limited to 16 trainees per week.  We will collect a waitlist.  Email Jackie Newell-Hunt (newellj@nih.gov) with questions.

NOTE - since this is a pilot program, we are unable to offer phone or videoconferencing. However, OITE career and wellness counselors are available to meet with NIH trainees on all NIH campuses (https://www.training.nih.gov/career_services#Career Staff). Furthermore, if successful, we will explore ways to bring similar programs to trainees outside of the Bethesda area.
