Postdoctoral Fellow - Viral Immunology

About the position

We are seeking a postdoctoral trainee with expertise in human cellular immunology to take on a leading role in the Viral Epidemiology and Immunity Unit (VEIU). In the VEIU, we use a multidisciplinary approach to investigate immunological protection against and susceptibility to emerging and reemerging viral diseases. A major goal of our work is to inform how vaccines can be effectively and safely licensed and used. Specifically, we are interested in three main themes: 1) host immunological determinants of long-term protection and disease risk, 2) antigenic and genetic viral evolution, and 3) interactions between individual immunity and epidemic dynamics. We use an array of immunological assays paired with computational and epidemiological methods to study complex viral diseases, including dengue and Zika. We work with collaborators on numerous longitudinal cohorts, including studies of natural flavivirus infections and flavivirus vaccines. We have recently established a Phase I clinical trial to study sequential dengue virus exposures and induction of broad protective immunity using a monovalent vaccine and will leverage high-dimensional flow cytometry, systems biology, single cell sequencing techniques, and in vitro and ex vivo cellular assays.

A postdoctoral trainee joining the current team of ten in the VEIU will be directly involved in the clinical trial, including: designing projects, developing new immunological assays, conducting high-impact translational research, interacting closely with collaborators based in the US and internationally, and mentoring junior trainees. Specifically, to identify immunological measures that are strongly associated with protection against viral replication and disease following sequential exposure to distinct dengue virus serotypes, we will characterize the serological, innate, and adaptive cell responses to dengue vaccine infection and immunologically profile the transcriptome, surface proteins, and B and T cell receptor sequences and affinities of single cells in both peripheral blood and draining lymph nodes sampled via serial image-guided fine needle aspiration.

Qualifications

Candidates should hold a PhD and have expertise in cellular immunology, especially B and/or T cell biology, and high-dimensional flow cytometry. Candidates who also have experience performing single-cell sequencing are preferred. Candidates should have no more than two years of postdoctoral experience and a peer-reviewed publication in a relevant field. An applicant with a passion for discovering the immunological determinants of anti-viral protection and leveraging clinical and observational studies to address fundamental questions in immunology would make an outstanding addition to our team.
