Project Description:
The antibiotic resistance project works to combat antibiotic resistance by developing and advancing research and policy to spur the innovation of new antibiotics and to reduce the use of antibiotics in people and in food animal production.

Position Overview:
The officer, based in Pew's Washington, DC, office, will inform and influence public policy by leading the project's scientific work related to spurring antibiotic discovery and development.

Reporting to the Manager, Antibiotic Resistance Project (Innovation) the officer will work closely with all members of the antibiotic resistance project team as well as other Pew colleagues in communications, research, government relations and other areas. The officer will help to coach and mentor junior staff, but will not directly supervise staff. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.


  • Under the direction and guidance of the manager:
  • Oversee the technical and scientific accuracy of work related to promoting the discovery and development of new antibiotics;
  • Serve as a guide to other project staff, sharing technical expertise and professional judgment as needed to ensure the project's portfolio meets the highest scientific standards;
  • Collaborate with Pew colleagues and leadership in the program, philanthropic partnerships, legal, finance, and other departments to inform the direction of the scientific discovery work;
  • Lead research on key scientific issues related to antibiotic innovation, developing research plans and guiding other project staff as needed to draft documents and background materials, and reviewing documents from consultants and stakeholders;
  • Guide the implementation of Pew's Roadmap for Antibiotic Discovery, including identifying opportunities to partner with key stakeholders from the public, private, nonprofit, and academic sectors, and developing and shepherding initiatives through Pew's internal approval process;
  • Manage the development of the Shared Platform for Antibiotic Research and Knowledge (SPARK), including collaborating with external partners;
  • Identify, as well as develop and maintain relationships with, key experts from the scientific research, public health, and policymaking communities, in order to strategically position Pew to achieve policy objectives related to antibiotic discovery and development;
  • Represent Pew as the lead subject matter expert in internal and external meetings;
  • Plan and oversee the execution of stakeholder convenings;
  • Contribute to and participate in human and animal antibiotic stewardship work, as well as broader Pew-wide projects, as needed.


  • Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree in the biological, chemical or physical sciences preferred;
  • At least 8 years of relevant professional experience, including demonstrated research, analytical, and communication skills, and experience translating technical knowledge to promote science and public health policy;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and cogently for target audiences including Pew colleagues, members of the Board, policy makers, scientists, and the public;
  • Demonstrated ability to summarize large amounts of information to focus quickly on the essence of an issue, and to identify, understand, and convey different perspectives;
  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally and collegially within a creative, fast-paced corporate culture that emphasizes excellence and teamwork;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, partners, and stakeholders, including from the public, private, nonprofit, and academic sectors;
  • Demonstrated time-management, meeting facilitation, and organizational skills;
