Immune Responses Following Vaccination and Viral Infection in Humans Fellowship

U.S. Food and Drug Administration , Silver Spring, Maryland

Position Description:
A research opportunity is currently available in the Lab of Retrovirus Research at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

CBER's mission is to ensure the safety, purity, potency, and effectiveness of biological products including vaccines, blood and blood products, and cells, tissues, and gene therapies for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of human diseases, conditions, or injury. The ongoing research performed involves the study of Zika, Ebola, Respiratory Syncytia Virus (RSV) and Pandemic Influenza viruses. We are presently addressing humoral immune responses following infection and vaccination in humans. The participant would have the oppurtunity to learn and understand the role of adjuvants and different vaccine modalities in eliciting broadly cross reactive protective antibodies. The advanced techniques developed in the lab includes whole genome gene-fragment phage display libraries (GFPDL), high throughput Surface plasmon resonance (SPR), protein production, vaccine development and animal challenge studies.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at FDA in Silver Springs, Maryland. Participants do not become employees of FDA or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Applicants must have received a Bachelor's degree or Master's degree within the last five years. Candidates with research experience in Influenza, RSV or related viruses is preferred. Background in infectious diseases, virology and immunology is highly desired.
