Join us on the edge of discovery as a Clinical Veterinarian. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), the world's largest medical research facility, has a challenging position available in the Division of Veterinary Resources (DVR), Veterinary Medicine Branch (VMB).

Working as a Clinical Veterinarian for the NIH requires expertise in laboratory animal medicine and a working knowledge of regulatory requirements for the care and use of animals in research. The successful candidate will be responsible for provision of clinical care, direction of technical staff, protocol review, and collaboration with investigative staff. The ability to work with a wide spectrum of individuals in a team setting is essential. The position will have clinical veterinary responsibilities in multiple facilities, housing multiple species including a large population of non-human primates. Practical experience with primate medicine is required.

Qualifications for the Clinical Veterinarian include a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education. Candidates must have successfully completed National Veterinary Board certification and an American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM)-recognized formal laboratory animal training program of at least 2 years duration following receipt of the veterinary medical degree, and be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state. Graduates of veterinary schools not AVMA accredited must have Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates certification.

Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. A full package of Civil Service benefits is available including retirement, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, leave, and savings plan (401(k) equivalent). Appointments for this position are made as Staff Scientist and are open to all sources. The position is based in Poolesville, Maryland.
