Staff Scientist - Advanced Visualization

Position Description:

The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) invites applications for a Staff Scientist (SS) under the supervision of Patricia Flatley Brennan, RN, PhD, Chief, Advanced Visualization Branch (AVB), Division of Intramural Research (DIR) in Bethesda, Maryland. Applications will be considered from outstanding Individuals working in areas of research related to the use of advanced visualization technologies to better understand human behavior and human performance, including but not limited to virtual reality, augmented reality, telemedicine, home care, self-management, and chronic disease management.

Nursing research has the capacity to inform the design of effective interventions for people facing homecare challenges through understanding the ways in which environments support or interfere with self-management. The Advanced Visualization Branch (AVB) develops and evaluates advanced visualization environments, particularly immersive virtual reality (VR), to study in depth the ways people carry out instrumental activities of daily living, the impact of cognitive challenges and distractors on performance, and the manner in which observations may complement or supplant self-report indicator of performance.

The position is intended for a scientist whose abilities and focus on research would make them a candidate for an independent research career path. This position aims to provide an investigator with advanced mentoring, and necessary resources, and to expand their scientific talents and knowledge. Staff Scientist are generally appointed to a time-limited position that is renewable depending on program needs and performance evaluations.

Duties:
• Collaborate in the development of and to the extent possible oversee and lead the development a program of research exploring cognitive, behavioral, and environmental factors that support or impede patient self-management
• Design clinical trials to evaluate the effects of immersive virtual reality on patient outcomes
• Manage the activities related to the conduct of research as an integral member of a unique and collaborative program
• Supervise a staff of about five individuals

Compensation:
• Salary is commensurate with education and experience

Qualifications:

• Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree, preferably in nursing
• A well-established record of publications
• Relevant experience with studies engaging human participants
• Ability to supervise and direct subordinate staff
• Ideal candidates will be creative and capable of conceiving and executing original research projects
• Candidates may be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or eligible for a visa that will enable work in the U.S.
