Position Description:

The Dalton School, a progressive K-12 school in New York, is consistently recognized as one of the preeminent independent day schools in the nation. Known for its child-centered approach and an exceptional, inspiring faculty, Dalton enrolls over 1,300 students with approximately 350 faculty and staff. Guided by the Dalton Plan, which is the foundation of a Dalton education, our faculty meets each student’s evolving needs, interests, and abilities, and values diversity as an integral part of school life. Dalton challenges each student to develop intellectual independence, creativity, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility toward others both within the School, and in the broader community.
 
We are seeking a full-time high school Science teacher with an expertise in Physics, starting September 2022. Science at Dalton is taught in an inquiry-based approach, with an emphasis on developing scientific habits of mind.
 
We are committed to ongoing curricular and pedagogical anti-racist work, and we seek a candidate who shares that commitment and who can contribute to our efforts. Our ideal candidate is passionate and knowledgeable about Physics, is comfortable taking an interdisciplinary approach, sees the scientist in every student, and makes science relevant to students by connecting the material to everyday life as well as important societal and environmental issues. They collaborate actively with colleagues on developing innovative and inclusive curriculum as well as equitable pedagogy and assessment practices. Ours is an intentionally diverse community with teachers who are passionate about a wide range of subjects and bring their varied interests to our students’ work.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Teach Physics, experience teaching Chemistry or advanced Physics topics is highly desired
  • Co-advise a group of students, likely beginning in the 2023-24 academic year
  • Design engaging curricula and lesson plans in collaboration with colleagues in and outside the department, and in alignment with the K-12 curriculum 
  • Engage actively in departmental and school-wide diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism efforts 
  • Work one-on-one with students daily for support and enrichment

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred
  • High school teaching and advising experience preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to equitable and inclusive practices, with respect to pedagogy, curriculum, and/or community engagement
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Facility with and willingness to learn educational technologies and learning management software
