Regulation of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell and Endothelial Cell Migration and Proliferation

Position Description:
The Monahan Laboratory studies novel mechanisms governing and regulating cell proliferation in blood vessels. Current cardiovascular interventions (both bypass and angioplasty and stenting) are currently limited by restenosis. Revascularization interventions cause trauma to the treated blood vessel which results in de-differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells causing them to revert to a more primitive, proliferative phenotype. These cells drive the processes that result in restenosis. Current therapies to prevent restenosis employ antiproliferative agents. However, these agents are non-specific and also prevent the reestablishment of a healthy thromboresistant endothelium. Our laboratory currently studies the myristolated alanine-rich C kinase substrate (MARCKS) which we have demonstrated promotes proliferation in smooth muscle cells and inhibits proliferation in endothelial cells both in vitro and in in vivo. Inhibition of MARCKS has great potential to prevent or limit restenosis after cardiovascular procedures.

Our laboratory is located in the Center for Vascular and Inflammatory Diseases at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

We are seeking talented, self-motivated candidates with a strong work ethic who have recently obtained his/her Ph.D. in the biomedical field. Candidates with background and experience in mouse in vivo studies and microsurgical skills are preferred. Candidates must have interest in physiology, cell biology, molecular biology or related field with a strong publication record in these areas. A thorough knowledge of the English language with good writing and oral communication skills are required as well as the ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
