Position Description:

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position in safer chemistry is available at the University of Massachusetts Lowell to undertake research and outreach on tools, drivers, and methods for that support that the design, evaluation and adoption of safer, more sustainable chemicals, materials, and products. The Safer Chemistry Postdoctoral Research Associate will work within Collaborative for Safe and Sustainable Chemistry of the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production, a world renowned initiative dedicated to advancing the development and adoption of safer chemicals and materials through research, development of tools and model policies, and strategic stakeholder engagement. The Collaborative has three main initiatives: advancing alternatives assessment; sustainable chemicals policy; and green and sustainable chemistry commercialization research.  

Under the mentorship of the Principal Investigator and senior advisors, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct research and manage projects that build a stronger understanding of methods for evaluating safer chemicals, criteria for safer and sustainable chemicals, and the economic, policy, and scientific changes (including drivers and barriers) that must occur to support the transition to safer, more sustainable chemistry.  The Postdoctoral Research Associate will also support the Association for the Advancement of Alternatives Assessment, the first professional society for the field.  The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work with the Principal Investigator to identify core priority projects that fully utilize the Fellow's skills and experience.  The Postdoctoral Research Associate will also work with the Collaborative’s Research Director on organizing professional meetings, outreach, and social media presence.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate may also be asked to contribute the development of interdisciplinary research projects or academic curriculum on safer chemistry in the Department of Public Health and College of Engineering.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research and outreach independently while working together as part of a small, dynamic, multi-disciplinary team of staff and consultants. The candidate should have excellent writing and speaking skills in order to communicate effectively with external project partners. Applicants should be self-motivated, dedicated, adaptable, and capable of multi-tasking.


Education and Experience:
  • An earned PhD in environmental health sciences, toxicology, chemistry, environmental policy, engineering or a related field by the time of the appointment
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience in safer chemical evaluation, design, and/or adoption in industry, government, or the non-profit sector
  • Knowledge of chemicals management policies
  • Knowledge of tools for chemicals hazard assessment, including lifecycle assessment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of/interest in safer/sustainable chemistry
  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Strong research, technical report writing and communication skills
  • Capable of working on several projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of software platforms

  • An ability to understand and be responsive to multiple stakeholder perspectives on problems and solutions
  • The Collaborative works in a high-pressure environment and the position of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will involve working under pressure to adhere to strict deadlines
