HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to support the support the Radiation Countermeasure Screening Program in the Scientific Research Department of the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) located at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to AFRRI.

Incumbent aids in the development of medical countermeasures against radiation in mouse model and execution of projects aimed to understand the mechanisms of radiation injury and developing assays and generating preliminary data for hypothesis driven new proposals under the guidance of the Principal Investigator and the Senior Staff Scientists in the laboratory.

  1. Plans, execute, and completes studies under the supervision of the head of the laboratory. Assignments require the performance of complex laboratory tests, working with animals, determinations, and analyses involving multiple procedures and a variety of technical approaches. (30%)
  2. Administer drug to animals through various routes, blood and tissue harvest, count blood cells after harvest. Makes detailed observations about experiments. (20%)
  3. Assists with the writing and editing of study design, study reports, experimental results for publication in technical and peer-reviewed journals. (20%)
  4. Perform complex molecular assays, troubleshoot, and standardize techniques; train junior staffs. (10%)
  5. Documents current or new procedures or protocols for sample selection, data collection, data processing, and/or statistical estimation. (10%)
  6. Organize and procures needed reagents and assays, performs experiments, analyze data, and documents results. Manage ordering supplies for the lab, manage inventory. (10%)
  7. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of complex laboratory procedures; ability to meet deadlines of projects; good communication and analytical skills, ability to work in a team.

Minimum Education: Doctoral degree is required.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 0-5 years of relevant work experience required.

Work Environment: Set in a laboratory work environment.

Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
