Biology-Inspired Synthetic Mucus Biomaterials

Position Description:

The Duncan Lab in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland (UMD) – College Park, is seeking applicants for two (2) NIH-funded Postdoctoral Research Associate positions. Successful candidates will join new collaborative and multidisciplinary projects in the application of bio-inspired synthetic mucus biomaterials for:
  • Local biotherapeutic delivery for inflammatory and infectious diseases in collaboration with Prof. Katharina Maisel (Bioengineering, UMD).
  • Viral aerosol capture technology development in collaboration with Prof. Donald Milton (School of Public Health, UMD).
Compensation for these positions will be at or above NIH guidelines, and will include benefits and retirement package offered by UMD. Postdoctoral research associates will be appointed on annual contracts with the expectation of completing 2-3 years of training. In addition to their assigned research project (1 of 2 described above), postdoctoral fellows will be encouraged and fully supported to develop & pursue new independent research directions, apply for fellowships & postdoc-to-faculty transition awards, and serve as research mentors for undergraduate & graduate trainees.


These positions require a doctoral degree in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or similar areas. Applicants should possess excellent written & oral communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team. All applicants should have demonstrated experience in the design and characterization of hydrogels and/or biomaterials. For applicants interested in our biotherapeutic delivery project, this research will require work with pre-clinical animal models.
