Computational Evolutionary Biology

Position Description:

A postdoctoral position is available in the research group of Dr. L. Aravind ( at the National Library of Medicine (NLM). We would like someone with a computational and/or bioinformatics background who is excited by the molecular details of biochemistry and biology to work on projects relating to protein evolution and the discovery of novel biochemical and biological conflict systems.

Our research uses sensitive sequence and structure analysis methods and comparative genomics to:

  • study the evolutionary classification of proteins,
  • examine large-scale evolutionary trends in genome evolution,
  • reconstruct functional networks of regulatory proteins and metabolic enzyme pathways from genome sequences,
  • predict novel biochemical activities and biological functions of proteins, and inference of organismal biology from comparative sequence and genome analysis, and
  • understand the fundamental interactions between natural selection and structural/genomic constraints in shaping protein domain diversity.


Candidates with a PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biological Sciences, or a related field and less than 5 years of prior postdoctoral experience are encouraged to apply. Strong knowledge of computational methods to study protein evolution, structure, and biochemistry/biology is required. Fluency in R, Python or Perl and good knowledge of computation in unix (unix-like) OS is highly desired.
