Position Description:
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to work on scientific projects for studying the systems neuroscience of drug addiction using in-vivo electrophysiology and multimodal imaging procedures in non-human primates. The position is located in the Behavioral Neuroscience Research Branch, Preclinical Pharmacology Section, within the Intramural Research Program (IRP) located in Baltimore, Maryland.

The primary projects for this position will address mechanisms of choice between drug and non-drug rewards, and investigate the neural processes whereby drug associated cues preferentially engage cognitive resources (attentional bias). The electrophysiological studies within our lab employ high density arrays of chronically implanted microelectrodes that are individually adjustable, enabling a "plug and play" approach for simultaneous recordings in multiple brain regions. Our laboratory is contiguous with state of the art MR and PET laboratories enabling ongoing close collaborations between the three laboratories. In addition to supporting the primary studies described above, other ongoing projects include characterization of the neurobiological consequences of repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and radioligand development for imaging the expression of engineered receptors such as DREADDs without sacrificing animals. We use squirrel monkey and rhesus macaque models in our studies. Overall, the NIDA intramural research program is an interactive collection of laboratories employing cutting edge methodologies devoted to understanding and reducing the risks of addiction. It is a highly collaborative and supportive environment for trainees.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. and experience in electrophysiology or another approach requiring Matlab based analytical/statistical approaches in neuroscience research. A strong research background in neuro/cognitive science is preferred. Individuals with interests and background using electrophysiology in primates for studying mechanisms of cognition are especially encouraged to apply. The lab provides an opportunity to establish collaborations and interactions between pre-, post-doctoral fellows, neuroscientists, behavioral pharmacologists, and drug abuse experts.
