Position Description:

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for a Post-Doctoral Fellow position in the Division of Intramural Research Programs (DIRP), in the Human Brain Collection Core, headed by Dr. Barbara K. Lipska.

The mission of the Human Brain Collection Core (HBCC) within the National Institute of Mental Health, Division of Intramural Programs (NIMH DIRP) is to conduct and support research on brain and behavior, with the goal of reducing the burden of mental illness. The HBCC is a national resource, providing unique opportunities in mental health research. The HBCC collects postmortem brains, generates RNA and DNA and collects molecular and genetic data using postmortem human samples. The HBCC disseminates the data to the scientific community through publicly accessible sites. Information gained from this research will lead to better understanding of brain dysfunction in mental disorders and development of new therapeutic and preventive strategies.

The data include whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, ChIP sequencing and DNA methylation in hundreds of subjects with mental disorders and non-psychiatric control individuals.


A Post-Doctoral Fellow position is available for a highly motivated individual interested in high-throughput data analysis and bioinformatics. An ideal candidate will have experience in biological data analyses and human genetics. Applicants should have a secondary degree (Ph.D. or MD with appropriate specialty) in genetics, bioinformatics or a related field and knowledge/interest of genetics and molecular biology. The candidate should have skills to apply molecular biological and histological techniques to validate findings obtained by the bioinformatic analyses. Highly motivated individuals with a record of productive research are encouraged to apply. The candidate will have access to the data generated in the HBCC and through high profile collaborations, and will be expected to publish papers, participate in scientific conferences and give presentations.
