Position Description:

An NIH-funded postdoctoral position is immediately available in the laboratory of Dr. Barbara Rehermann, Immunology Section, Liver Diseases Branch, NIDDK, NIH to conduct translational and basic studies on immune responses to viruses, in particular those that affect the liver, and the regulation of systemic and hepatic immune responses by the gut microbiome.

The laboratory conducts translational studies of well-defined patient cohorts to understand disease progression in chronic viral hepatitis, to evaluate immune-modulatory therapies for hepatitis B and hepatitis D virus infection and to define protective immune responses in hepatitis C virus and hepatitis D virus infection (Gastroenterology 2019;156:369-383; Gastroenterology 153:1392-1403: 2017; Immunity, 40:13-24, 2014).

The laboratory also conducts basic and translational studies to understand the regulation of inflammation and immunity by the gut microbiome based on the concept that natural microbiota co-evolved with their respective hosts under evolutionary pressure and confer host fitness-promoting.  For example, the laboratory has recently developed a mouse model that combines the tractable genetics of the standard laboratory mice with the fitness-promoting traits of microbes (Cell, 171: 1015-1028, 2017). This model may identify mechanisms of host physiology and disease resistance in the natural world, improve preclinical efficacy and safety testing, and more accurately reflect diseases in humans (see

Applicants must have a Ph.D., M.D. or D.V.M. degree, and fewer than 3 years of postdoctoral training.  Previous experience in multiparameter flow cytometry, molecular biology, gene expression analysis, intestinal cell isolation, and/or mouse models of disease is desired.
