Position Description:

A funded postdoctoral position is available in the Integrative Immunobiology Section of the Laboratory of Immune System Biology, NIAID to dissect the gene expression program of fetal hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). In contrast to adult HSCs, the clinical potential of fetal HSCs remain under-explored. We are seeking the knowledge to engineer improved HSCs that can better regenerate the human immune system. Our interests include mapping gene regulatory networks with the goal of elucidating the roles of RNA-binding proteins and non-coding RNAs in (re)programming transcriptomes and ultimately cell fates. To address these fundamental issues, we employ an integrative systems biology approach to reverse engineer the molecular logic of cell fate determination. We combine genome- and transcriptome-wide measurements (eg. single-cell ATAC-seq and RNA-seq) with experimental perturbations to test and refine our models. As one example of our success, we identified the RNA-binding protein Lin28b as a lineage-specification factor for fetal HSCs, a discovery with potentially important implications for Regenerative Medicine and a novel therapeutic avenue for beta-thalassemia and sickle cell disease. We are seeking outstanding postdoctoral candidates particularly with a strong scientific background and the desire to conduct high risk, high reward, cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary research. Individuals interested and skilled in computational analyses of big data are welcomed. Our group works in recently renovated space on the main campus of NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. The successful candidate will have access to generous research support and state-of-the-art high performance parallel computing in the outstanding research environment of the NIH intramural research program. Candidates must have a Ph.D., M.D. or M.D./Ph.D., as well as prior research experience and record of productivity. The initial appointment will be for one year and renewable annually for up to five years total if mutually agreeable.
