Spatiotemporal Bioinformatics

Position Description:

We are seeking a talented and motivated postdoctoral fellow with training and experience in statistics and/or bioinformatics for a position in the newly formed Spatiotemporal Health Analytics Group (PI: Dr. Kyle P. Messier). The group is home in the Division of the National Toxicology Program at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and affiliated with the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities.

The Spatiotemporal Health Analytics Group is a new interdisciplinary research group at NIEHS/DNTP focusing on spatiotemporal methods and applications that bridge human health exposure science, epidemiology, and toxicology. The position will be part of the intramural research section of NIH. Trainee positions at NIH/NIEHS offer a wide range of benefits including consistent, internal funding from NIH; access to core facilities such as statistical, microarray, epigenomics, and pathology support; opportunities to collaborate with intramural NIEHS scientists such as the Biostatistics and Computational Biology Branch, Epidemiology Branch, and Office of Data Science; and travel support for presenting research at regional and international conferences.


A doctoral degree (Ph.D., Sc.D., M.D., etc.) in statistics, bioinformatics, toxicology, or epidemiology. Exceptional doctoral candidates that are “All But Dissertation” may be considered. The fellow’s time will be devoted to data analysis, manuscript writing, and career development. Fellows will have the opportunity to propose related research that can be internally funded and are also eligible and encouraged to apply for K-series (e.g. K99/R00) and non-NIH research grants in pursuant to an independent research career.

Desired skills and experience:
  • Scientific writing and oral communication
  • Spatial analysis, big data, and data visualization
  • Experience analyzing toxicity assays and -omic datasets
  • Software experience: Scientific computing such as R or MATLAB. GitHub and/or LaTeX a plus.

Salary and benefits are highly competitive. Initial appointment will be two years with additional time (up to 5 years) depending on productivity.
