Train the Trainers 2020: Agenda

NOTICE: This is the updated schedule for the Virtual Train-the-Trainers 2020. We have adjusted the start time to accommodate West Coast attendees. Additionally, we have added a third day (Thursday) to provide content around trainee issues for current events. All registrants will also be invited to participate in a small group discussions (1-hour) to enhance their learning.

Day One: July 20, 2020

Welcome and Promoting the mental health and wellness of the biomedical research community

Speaker: Sharon Milgram (OITE)

This session will provide an overview of strategies of how we can help biomedical trainees navigate the stresses of life, science and research. We will also set the stage for the workshops over the next three days.

12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

Responding Empathically to Survivors of Trauma
Discussions of how trauma & PTSD influence our trainees; how to support trainees in managing the impact of trauma.

Connecting with Trainees Navigating Anxiety and Depression
Anxiety and depression cause physical and emotional symptoms that impact productivity for our trainees. Explore these challenges and learn strategies to support trainees.

An Introduction to Suicide Prevention
Learn more about the risk factors related to suicide, as well as recognizing the signs of suicidal ideation, in an effort to enhance suicide prevention and support the goal of preventing suicide in the trainee population.

Executive Functioning and Attention 
Explore the defining features of executive functioning skills-- factors that impact the efficacy of executive functioning and attention in adults. We will explore ways to support trainees in strengthening/growing tools in this domain.

1:30 PM-4:30 PM

 

Career Advising 
One major role we have is helping trainees navigate career decisions. Career counselors will share theories and practices to improve our career advising skills. We will also discuss helping trainees through current events that impact career trajectories.

A break will be provided during this session.

4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Taking Care of Our Well-Being
We are helping our trainees through stressful situations, all the while trying to take care of ourselves, work, families and more. We will discuss wellness and self-care strategies critical for our ability to take care of ourselves while helping others.

The Impact of Current Events on Trainee Health and Wellness
We are living in unprecedented times- a global pandemic, increasing polarization, and painful examples of violence against individuals and communities of color. This session will include lecture and interactive components.
