Housing near main campus
Information on finding a place to live near, or within commuting distance of, the main NIH campus.
General information
NIH does not provide housing for fellows. These housing resources are provided for informational purposes only. The DC area can be an expensive place to live, and the NIH is unable to provide housing for fellows.
If you are a trainee on another NIH campus, we encourage you to reach out directly to your PI (Principal Investigator, the leader of your NIH research group) and IC (Institute or Center) training director for information.
Keep in mind
Here is a list of general recommendations:
- The cost-of-living increases with proximity to public transportation and accessibility to the downtown DC area and other local hotspots.
- The region is well connected with public transportation options, although a car may be helpful depending on distance from public transportation in suburban areas.
- Units may come furnished or unfurnished. In addition, some utilities may or may not be provided. Discuss these with your landlord before signing your move-in documents/contracts.
- Some fellows may find the utilization of online rental marketplaces, vacation rentals, hotels, and other temporary housing options beneficial to getting accustomed to the area.
