Founded in 1969, the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) now has more than 36,000 members in more than 95 countries. Year-round programming includes the publishing of two highly regarded scientific journals, JNeurosci and eNeuro; professional development resources and career training through Neuronline, the Society’s home for learning and discussion; science advocacy and public policy engagement including annual Capitol Hill Day; and a variety of engaging public outreach efforts, led by the expanding and interactive collection of public-facing resources on BrainFacts.org. SfN’s annual meeting regularly attracts more than 30,000 attendees, representing 80 countries; 536 exhibiting companies; and close to 300 journalists. Position Summary

The Journal Communications Associate promotes scientific research published in and increases readership of SfN’s two journals, the Journal of Neuroscience and eNeuro. The Associate’s primary role is outreach and communication to the scientific community, as well as contributing to other department strategic communication efforts through writing and editing.

Essential Job Functions

  • Manage the journals’ social media presence, primarily on Twitter, by drafting posts to promote articles and other journal initiatives, monitoring online conversations about SfN-published research, and tracking key metrics.
  • Review accepted papers for both journals to identify articles for additional promotion through appropriate channels, including social media, press releases, webinars, etc.
  • Supporting the journals’ press promotion activities by selecting articles of interest, coordinating review and approval by the Public Education and Communications Committee, scheduling embargo dates, and collating content and coordinating with Digital Strategy for weekly media email.
  • Support production of journal webinar series and podcast channel by identifying discussion content, inviting speakers, scheduling, and collaborating across teams to set up each event.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to internal marketing and digital communication teams for journal content promotion activities.
  • Support journal-specific email communications and coordinate with other internal departments on Society-wide communications.
  • Monitor performance and metrics of communication campaigns and online readership of websites. Assist the department’s science communication needs in other ways as needed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required; degree in neuroscience, life sciences, or science journalism preferred. 1–2 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in written scientific communication.

Qualifications

  • Strong writing skills, specifically the ability to create concise, lay-friendly language from highly technical work on schedule.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proficiency with social media, including metrics and best practices.
  • Ability to work with Sitecore or similar CMS platform a plus.
  • Strong proofreading skills.
