Postgraduate Associate (Yale)

The Liu Lab in the Department of Cell Biology at Yale School of Medicine is now seeking a motivated and responsible Postgraduate Associate to join our research group.

About the position

Our lab studies metabolic and redox homeostasis in the endoplasmic reticulum and secretory pathway, including ER metabolite transporters, organelle metabolomics, ER redox biology, ER stress responses, and liver and metabolic disease.

This full-time, on-site research-training position is designed for individuals who have completed a bachelor’s and want intensive research experience before pursuing a PhD, MD/PhD, or related research career.

The associate will assist with the design, execution, analysis, and interpretation of experiments, maintain accurate laboratory records and research data, and read and discuss relevant scientific literature in order to present progress at lab meetings, and contribute to figures, presentations, and manuscripts when appropriate. This individual will be expected to help maintain shared laboratory organization, reagents, and equipment, and collaborate with other lab members.

Technical training will include mammalian cell culture and molecular biology techniques, biochemical and cell-based assays, and CRISPR-based gene editing, as well as organelle isolation and ER immunoprecipitation. Metabolomic and proteomic sample preparation and data interpretation will also be part of this position, as will the use of mouse genetics, tissue collection, and disease models.

This trainee will receive close mentorship, increasing responsibility and independence, and guidance in scientific communication as their advance their graduate-school preparation and career development.

This position has a flexible start date. Initial appointment is for one year, with anticipated renewal for a second year based on performance and funding. Applicants should be able to commit to at least two years of research training. Compensation will follow Yale University’s Postgraduate Compensation guidelines.

Qualifications

Prospective applicants should have a Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, chemistry, biomedical sciences, and or a related field. We are seeking reliable and responsible candidates with an attention to detail ands strong organizational skills. applicants should have a willingness to learn new techniques, accept feedback, and persist through experimental challenges as they develop as scientists.

We will also be assessing candidates ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Applicants should have strong written and oral communication skills. Preferably, candidates will have prior laboratory research experience, including with cell culture, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, microscopy, animal models, and/or quantitative data analysis. Applicants are not expected to have experience in all these listed techniques. Candidates with complementary backgrounds and a strong interest in learning are encouraged to apply. Intellectual curiosity is a must.
