Job

Postdoctoral Fellow

A postdoctoral fellowship is available in the Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics Branch of the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), to develop next-generation hematopoietic stem cell transplantation strategies for genetic blood disorders.

About the position

Our laboratory investigates innovative approaches that improve the safety, durability, and accessibility of stem cell gene therapy by combining gene engineering with targeted conditioning and selective expansion of edited hematopoietic stem cells.

These studies integrate human hematopoietic stem cell biology with clinically relevant mouse and nonhuman primate transplantation models. As such, our current research areas include:

  • Antibody-based conditioning strategies targeting hematopoietic stem cells
  • Engineering hematopoietic stem cells for resistance to targeted conditioning agents
  • In vivo selection and expansion of genetically modified stem cells
  • Lentiviral gene addition and genome editing approaches for hemoglobinopathies
  • Evaluation of hematopoietic reconstitution, lineage output, and long-term stem cell function following transplantation
  • Development of chemotherapy-free transplantation strategies with improved safety and efficacy
  • Translation of novel conditioning and transplantation approaches into large animal models

Again, our laboratory emphasizes rigorous mechanistic research while pursuing translational studies designed to advance safer and more effective stem cell therapies for patients with inherited blood disorders.
