Postdoctoral Fellow

The Molecular Imaging Branch at the National Cancer Institute Center for Cancer Research is now seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join their team in Bethesda, Maryland.

About the position

The NCI Molecular Imaging Branch engages in both clinical and pre-clinical research to develop targeted imaging methods for the purpose of accelerating the development of cancer therapies. More specifically, the Imaging Physics section of the Molecular Imaging Branch develops new technologies to power the next generation of imaging devices for PET imaging.

For instance, we are developing novel PET detectors and imaging systems, a PET scanner using only time of flight information for event location, and a scanner based on AI-driven image reconstruction, among other projects. We are seeking a highly-motivated individual to join our research team and apply their knowledge to advance imaging of cancer. Candidates should be adept at using physics simulation packages to help design next generation imaging system and support new and ongoing benchtop projects.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a recent Ph.D. degree in physics and/or electrical or biomedical engineering. Candidates should possess a working knowledge of radiation transport physics, modern radiation detection and measurement instrumentation, and the high-speed electronics that service these devices. The most successful candidates will have hands-on experience with radiation detectors (scintillator or semiconductor based), modern photosensors such as SiPMs and MCP-PMTs, and contemporary high-speed electronics and data acquisition systems. Knowledge of programming languages such as C/C++, root, Python, LabVIEW and/or Matlab, as well as CERN based simulation tools like GEANT4, TOPAS and/or GATE, is highly desirable.

Experience with Monte Carlo physics simulation tools is particularly important because these methods will guide our ongoing and future projects. Familiarity with artificial intelligence, neural networks, and/or similar tools is also highly desirable as we continue our ongoing collaborative work with the Molecular Imaging Branch Artificial Intelligence Resource group.
