Postdoctoral Fellow (Social, Behavioral and Population Science)

The mission of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) is to lead scientific research to improve minority health and eliminate health disparities. The NIMHD Division of Intramural Research (DIR) supports integrative and multidisciplinary research. Its research agenda addresses a wide array of health problems that disproportionately affect health disparity populations.

About the position

The Tobacco Related Disparities & Control (TRDC) Lab, Social & Behavioral Science Branch, DIR, NIMHD has an opening for one (1) postdoctoral position in Bethesda, Maryland. One of our research goals is to conduct research on social, behavioral and population factors related to commercial tobacco use disparities, and to develop and test interventions to modify these factors to reduce such disparities. Applicants will work with investigators in the NIMHD DIR (primarily with Dr. Kelvin Choi) conducting research on commercial tobacco use disparities, marketing and counter-marketing using qualitative and quantitative, observational and experimental methodologies. There will be opportunities to collaborate with investigators at other NIH Institutes/Center as well as academic institutes on national/regional studies. Applicants will be involved in designing studies, conducting data analysis, and preparing presentations and publications under the supervision of the investigator.

Qualifications

PhD in Social & Behavioral Epidemiology, Social & Behavioral Sciences, or Population Sciences from an accredited college or university. Pre-docs who have completed all course work and are in their final year of their PhD program will also be considered. Expertise in epidemiology, health behaviors, tobacco control, sociology, social psychology, health communication, marketing, and/or advertising are strongly preferred. Experience with statistical analysis software (e.g., SAS, Stata, R and/or Mplus) is required. Qualitative research experience is also strongly preferred, as well as experience with analyzing data from the nationally representative studies (e.g., US Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health [PATH] Study. Applicants should also be interested in social, behavioral, and/or population factors related to minority health and health disparities in general and commercial tobacco use specifically.
