The Laboratory of Translational Genomics, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral fellow to join the Jiyeon Choi Research Laboratory. The group studies genetic susceptibility to lung cancer, focusing on mechanistic understanding of genomic data from epidemiological studies such as genome-wide association studies (GWAS).
About the position
This position offers an opportunity to explore the genetic risk of lung cancer by characterizing genomic loci associated with the disease in the general population. The research focuses on identifying functional genetic variants, susceptibility genes, and biological pathways contributing to risk. For this, the group adopts a wide range of functional genomics approaches, including expression quantitative loci (eQTL), massively parallel reporter assays, Hi-C, CRISPR, and single-cell sequencing technologies. Conventional molecular genetics and cell biology approaches are also being adopted to functionally characterize the tumor-promoting potential of the identified genes in cell-based systems. The focus of this position will be leading/co-leading international collaborative projects and designing and performing experiments while working closely with multidisciplinary experts such as bioinformaticians, clinicians, and statisticians. Opportunities for learning bioinformatics skills for analyzing high-dimensional genomic data and mentoring postbaccalaureate or summer students will be available. Qualifications
Candidates must have completed or will soon complete a Ph.D. or equivalent degree with an emphasis in human genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, cancer biology, population genetics, bioinformatics, or related areas within the past five years. A demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary and diverse team, and clear verbal and written communication skills will be favored. Salary will be determined based on NCI stipend schedule for postdoctoral fellows. Applicants may be U.S. citizens, permanent residents; or foreign nationals (visa requirements apply). Candidates are subject to a background investigation.

There is limited understanding of the pathobiological mechanisms underlying how chemical compounds in the air and everyday consumer products influence lung disease and CVD onset. Dr. Wong leads epidemiologic studies to understand how these exposures -originating in the home, community, and workplace- influence disease pathogenesis through pathways involving DNA alterations. Dr. Wong is focused on identifying omics biomarkers of environmental exposures, disease risk, and genomic instability.
