Job
Postdoctoral Fellow
Organization
National Cancer Institute, Frederick, MD
About the position
A postdoctoral position is available in Dr. Sandra Wolin’s laboratory at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland. We study how noncoding RNAs fold into complex structures and function within cells, how cells recognize and eliminate misfolded and otherwise defective noncoding RNAs, and how failure to degrade defective RNAs affects cell function and contributes to diseases such as cancer and autoimmunity. Our approach is multidisciplinary, as we combine state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques, genetics, biochemistry, and structural biology to determine the mechanisms by which RNA chaperones function, to uncover novel functions for noncoding RNAs, and to identify new RNA surveillance pathways. Our studies are carried out in human cells, mice, and bacteria, and capitalize on the specific strengths of each of these organisms. For more information, see https://ccr.cancer.gov/staff-directory/sandra-l-wolin
Our group is part of the RNA Biology Laboratory in the Center for Cancer Research. We are part of the National Cancer Institute RNA Biology Initiative, which includes more than 50 laboratories at the Frederick and Bethesda campuses of the National Cancer Institute. The environment is highly collaborative and collegial, with the ability to interact with a wide range of scientists and clinicians. The position is ideal for motivated candidates who are seeking additional training in RNA biology.

There is limited understanding of the pathobiological mechanisms underlying how chemical compounds in the air and everyday consumer products influence lung disease and CVD onset. Dr. Wong leads epidemiologic studies to understand how these exposures -originating in the home, community, and workplace- influence disease pathogenesis through pathways involving DNA alterations. Dr. Wong is focused on identifying omics biomarkers of environmental exposures, disease risk, and genomic instability.
