Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Associate

The Department of Physiology & Biophysics, Howard University College of Medicine, is looking to hire a Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Associate or lab technician, who is interested in pregnancy-related disorders such as gestational diabetes mellitus and their long-term impact on the health of the mother and offspring such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Our research will apply conventional life science technologies and cutting-edge technologies including gene manipulations and multiple omics in the study of primary cells, cell and animal models in vivo, ex vivo, or in vitro. We are seeking an ambitious and highly motivated person to lead studies focused on elucidating the underlying mechanisms related to placental mitophagy, metabolism and communications with other major organs.

The Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Associate will participate in human and mouse tissue collections, mouse in vivo and ex vivo studies, cell culture and treatment, and be responsible for experimentations in the lab, following the Principal Investigator’s instructions. All necessary training can be provided. Evening and weekend work may be required based on the progress of experimentation. This position is available immediately.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:

Able to conduct general laboratory maintenance and activities such as preparing buffer and reagents for biochemical, molecular, cellular and histological tests, perform cell and tissue-based experimentation and mouse based in vitro and in vivo analyses.

Provide help to the laboratory personnel and train high schoolers, undergraduate and graduate students, medical students and residents in the laboratory settings.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Performs basic molecular biology techniques including gel electrophoresis; genotyping of mouse models, growth of bacteria and preparation of plasmids DNA, cloning, and mutagenesis;

Isolation of DNAs, RNAs and proteins from mammalian cells and tissues samples; perform PCR and RT-PCR, western blotting, mitochondrial analyses, mammalian cell culture, treatment and analysis, as well as other standard techniques for biochemical, cellular and molecular biology. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

To perform assignments, requiring at least a basic working knowledge of scientific methods, computer, or experimental testing.

Assist the Principal Investigator with specific phases of research projects.

CORE COMPETENCIES: Self-motivation in basic medical research is required. The candidate will use personal protection equipment (furnished) and work around chemical fumes, biosafety cabinet, and animal facilities. May work around standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. May work around biohazards. SALARY RANGE $43000-53000/year, plus benefits

For the title of Postdoctoral Fellow:

• Ph.D. in Biomedical science/Genetics/Cell Biology/Biochemistry is required.

For the title of Research Associate:

• B.S. and M.S. in life sciences or related disciplines may be eligible for this position, depending on the applicant’s research background and skills.
