The Rusan lab (www.rusanlab.com) within the Cell and Developmental Biology Center (CDBC) at the NHLBI is seeking two postdoctoral fellows. The primary goal of this position is to assist in launching the postdoc’s independent career by fostering and supporting the development of their future research program.
About the position
The applicant will have the opportunity to utilize all resources offered by the Rusan lab, the CDBC, and the NIH. This includes:
- A fully funded position for up to 5 years, enabling the postdoc to concentrate on developing their research program.
- A dedicated support staff within the Rusan lab: the PI (Nasser Rusan), a Staff Scientist (Brian Galletta), and a lab technician (Carey Fagerstrom), each with over 20 years of research experience and focused on supporting postdocs.
- A wealth of expertise within the CDBC and across the NIH main campus that spans the entirety of biomedical research.
- NHLBI core facilities, which include one of the best light microscopy facilities in the US.
- Extensive career support thorough the NHLBI Office of Education and NIH’s OITE https://www.training.nih.gov/
The details of any research project need not be determined a priori. However, to optimally support the postdoc in achieving their goals, projects should align with the broad interests of the lab, which encompass the cytoskeleton, centrosome biology, mitosis, and spermatogenesis. We are also broadening our efforts in collaboration with NHLBI clinical investigators and Undiagnosed Disease Program (UDP) to model human diseases and screen for therapeutics. While the lab primarily uses Drosophila as a model system, a background in Drosophila genetics is not required.

There is limited understanding of the pathobiological mechanisms underlying how chemical compounds in the air and everyday consumer products influence lung disease and CVD onset. Dr. Wong leads epidemiologic studies to understand how these exposures -originating in the home, community, and workplace- influence disease pathogenesis through pathways involving DNA alterations. Dr. Wong is focused on identifying omics biomarkers of environmental exposures, disease risk, and genomic instability.
