A postdoctoral position on understanding the genetic basis for human autoinflammatory oropharyngeal disorders is available in the Oropharyngeal Mucosal Immunology Unit at NIAID, headed by Dr. Kalpana Manthiram. Our laboratory investigates inflammatory tonsillar and mucosal diseases and performs complex genomic analyses as well as functional and immunologic assays to understand the mechanism of these conditions.
About the position
We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to join our team in studying the mechanism of complex human genetic inflammatory tonsil disorders including a periodic fever syndrome called PFAPA (periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, adenitis syndrome) and recurrent tonsillitis in children. The successful candidate will perform a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to discover genetic risk loci and HLA risk alleles for these conditions as well as immunologic studies at the bench to understand the functional significance of these risk variants. The candidate will be responsible for leading and performing GWAS analyses of large-scale genotyping data, assessing whole genome sequencing data, performing experiments at the bench, analyzing and interpreting data, preparing manuscripts for publication in high-impact journals, and presenting findings at national and international conferences. This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated researcher to advance their career in a dynamic and supportive environment and work with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and scientists.

There is limited understanding of the pathobiological mechanisms underlying how chemical compounds in the air and everyday consumer products influence lung disease and CVD onset. Dr. Wong leads epidemiologic studies to understand how these exposures -originating in the home, community, and workplace- influence disease pathogenesis through pathways involving DNA alterations. Dr. Wong is focused on identifying omics biomarkers of environmental exposures, disease risk, and genomic instability.
