Research Technician

Prospective technicians will contribute to research on bacteriophage endolysins and other antimicrobial proteins and peptides directed against bacterial pathogens. Our current projects combine techniques in molecular cloning, cell culture, recombinant protein expression and purification, biochemical and microbiological assays, microscopy, and bioinformatics.

Responsibilities of this position include cloning and recombinant DNA methods, bacterial culture, cell culture, protein expression and purification, biochemical characterization of antimicrobial proteins and peptides, microbiological assays, microscopy and image analysis, bioinformatic analysis of protein sequences, experimental documentation, data analysis, and general laboratory maintenance.

This technician will work with laboratory members and collaborators and have opportunities to contribute to scientific presentations and peer-reviewed publications. Responsibilities may be tailored in part to the individual’s previous experience and interests. This is a full-time, on-site laboratory position at IBBR in Rockville, Maryland. Funding is secured for two years.

Interested applicants should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering, and/or a related field. Previous laboratory research experience is preferred. Experience with one or more of the methods described above would be helpful, but applicants are not expected to have experience in every area.

Candidates should be careful, dependable, and organized, as well as able to maintain accurate experimental records, work both independently and collaboratively, and communicate research results clearly.
