Job

Staff Scientist

A Staff Scientist position is available in Dr. Dorian McGavern’s lab. Our lab studies innate & adaptive immune responses to acute & persistent infections of the central nervous system, as well as sterile immune responses that develop following traumatic brain injury & cerebrovascular injuries.

About the position

Our research covers infect Central Nervous System immune cell surveillance, the pathogenesis of viral meningitis and viral encephalitis, the mechanisms underlying viral persistence, therapeutic strategies to eliminate persistent infections, the pathogenesis of cerebral malaria, and immune responses due to traumatic brain injury. Our group integrates approaches spanning virology, immunology, and neuroscience, and makes extensive use of advanced imaging technologies, such as intravital two-photon microscopy, to visualize immune responses and disease processes in real time within the living brain.

The focus of this Staff Scientist position is to support the research goals of the NINDS Viral Immunology & Intravital Imaging Section by independently proposing, designing, and performing experiments, as well as contributing to mentoring and training activities within the group. Successful candidates will play a central role in advancing ongoing research programs and developing new experimental directions.

Candidates will be responsible for:

  • Leading and managing independent research projects related to viral immunology and CNS immune responses.
  • Designing and performing experiments using mouse models of infection, inflammation, and brain injury.
  • Performing and analyzing advanced imaging experiments, including intravital two-photon microscopy of immune responses in the CNS.
  • Collaborating with investigators within NINDS and across the NIH intramural research community.
  • Writing manuscripts describing research findings and presenting results at scientific meetings.
  • Supervising and mentoring trainees, including postbaccalaureate fellows, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.

At NIH, Staff Scientists are a central member of research teams who typically oversees the scientific and mentoring aspects of a Principal Investigator’s research program. Opportunities also exist for Staff Scientists to develop independent research initiatives within the scientific scope of their laboratory.
