Communication and Team Dynamics

• Regardless of where your career takes you, working with other people is likely to be in you future (and your present). Understanding different communication styles and how team dynamics work can help you limit misunderstandings, advocate for what you need, navigate conflict and ultimately increase your chances at succeeding. This workshop will cover the four dominant styles of communication, their potential strengths and risks and how you can understand AND communicate with those whose styles differ from you. These styles will be discussed within the context of teams, their different stages from forming to performing and how to best position yourself to lead and succeed.

Managing Mentor Relationships with Conflict and Feedback

• Being a trainee is hard. Roles can be poorly defined, feedback can feel either too negative or not direct enough and conflict feels like its either avoided or unavoidable. The good news is that you can help shape your mentor/supervisor relationship. This workshop will look at the multiple roles both you and your PI hold in your relationship. It will lay out ways to advocate for what you need, receive and deliver feedback and how best to handle conflict in the context of a trainee and supervisor.
