2022 Summer Journal Club Leader Information
Goals of the Summer Journal Club program:
- To provide teaching, mentoring, and administrative experience for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows
- To provide opportunities for summer interns to:
- Gain critical reading experience
- Learn about laboratory techniques
- Practice discussing scientific topics
Guidelines and tasks for club leaders:
- Find a partner with whom you will lead the journal club.
- Watch the recording of the "Tips for Leading a Summer Journal Club" webinar.
- Determine when the club will meet (should be weekly, minimum of 4 times, and maximum of 6 times between June 13th and July 29th, 2022).
- Create and host the meetings on the virtual platform of your choice (Zoom, Webinar, Teams, etc.) All journal clubs for 2022 will be virtual.
- Maintain attendance list
- At the initial club meeting:
- Briefly review how to read a scientific paper
- Provide details on the format of your club
- Give general background about the topics and techniques covered
- Select papers or review and approve papers selected by students (have backup papers ready)
- Communicate papers to be discussed to students at least one week in advance of the meeting
- Support students and facilitate discussion of the papers
- Provide feedback to students on their presentation/evaluation of the paper
- The toolkit is available upon request by email.
Summer Journal Club Leader Application:
Applications should include:
- Title
- Description
- Names of co-leaders
- Dates, times, and meeting links (must schedule at least four sessions)

Evaluation: We will collect evaluations from both students and leaders
- Evaluation forms will be sent electronically to all participants in mid-July.
- Evaluation forms will be sent electronically to all co-leaders at the end of July.
