M.S. or B.S. research associate, immunity to intracellular bacteria

We seek candidates for a research fellowship or contract position available summer 2024 in the Elkins lab at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research of the U.S. FDA (CBER/FDA), located on the FDA’s White Oak Campus in Silver Spring, MD; we continue to maintain strong ties to the NIH scientific community in Bethesda. CBER is a unique environment in which to conduct research related to the development of new biomedical products, particularly new vaccines.

About the position

Our laboratory is interested in the nature of protective immunity to intracellular bacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Francisella tularensis (for more information about the lab’s work, please see recent publications via https://tinyurl.com/y88htkf9). This position will support work on current laboratory projects, particularly those related to M. tuberculosis. Studies revolve around using animal models to defining protective immune mechanisms, understanding host genetic control of protection, and developing vaccine-induced correlates of protection.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a recent M.S. degree in microbiology and/or immunology; bench research experience related to the laboratory’s work; intelligence, independence, and initiative; and excellent organizational, writing, and interpersonal skills. B.S.-level candidates with applicable experience will also be considered. Particular consideration will be given to candidates who have experience with sterile tissue culture, cellular immunology, BSL-3 procedures, and/or mouse infection models.This position will be appointed initially for 1 year with the potential for renewal, contingent on excellent performance and future funding. Positions may be appointed by either by a one year professional services contract, or via a fellowship from ORISE (see http://orise.orau.gov/fda/). ORISE candidates must be within 5 years of receiving their highest degree; all candidates must have lived in the U.S. for a minimum of 3 of the last 5 years. U.S. citizens, non-citizens with permanent resident status, or non-citizens that are eligible for a J-1 visa are eligible for ORISE positions (please note: only J-1 visas are acceptable for ORISE positions). Stipends correspond roughly to U.S. government GS scales, are commensurate with education and experience, and include an allowance for mandatory health insurance.
