Staff Clinician

The NIH National Eye Institute is now seeking an outstanding retina-trained ophthalmologist for a Staff Clinician position in the Clinical Trials Branch, Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Applications.

About the position

This staff clinician will provide clinical care for patients with retinal diseases, conduct clinical research in retinal diseases, and mentor junior clinical fellows, medical students, and post-bac IRTAs in medical retina and clinical research. Candidates will join a multidisciplinary clinical research group focused on retinal diseases, multimodal ophthalmic imaging, and longitudinal clinical datasets.

This position combines patient care, clinical research, protocol development, imaging-based biomarker evaluation, and the mentorship of trainees. Research activities will focus on disease progression, structure-function relationships, clinical trial and natural history datasets, and advanced analysis of multimodal retinal images. Areas of emphasis may include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, geographic atrophy, and rare retinal diseases. This Staff Clinician will also contribute to manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and other scholarly products, as well as collaborate with clinicians, statisticians, imaging scientists, and other investigators across NEI and NIH.

Qualifications

Candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent medical degree and have completed ophthalmology residency. Fellowship training in medical retina, vitreoretinal surgery, or equivalent retina subspecialty training and clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of retinal diseases will also be required. Evidence of scientific productivity, such as peer-reviewed publications or conference presentations is a plus.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in multimodal retinal imaging (OCT, OCTA, fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, or fundus autofluorescence), Ophthalmic image analysis, segmentation, grading, and/or imaging biomarker evaluation, and those who are conducted clinical trials, natural history studies, or worked with longitudinal imaging datasets. Experience with retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, geographic atrophy, diabetic retinopathy, or rare retinal disorders, and a history of collaborating with computational, statistical, or machine learning teams is highly desirable.
