William J. (Dr. Bill) Higgins began advising NIH personnel in 2011, and currently advises post-baccalaureate investigators seeking admission to medical, dental, and graduate programs. Bill’s long-term interest in teaching, mentoring, and advising future physicians and investigators has resulted in over 2,500 of his former students now being addressed as “Doctor”.
Bill received his B.S. from Boston College in 1969, and his Ph.D. from Florida State University in 1973. In August of 1973, Bill began his faculty career at Maryland as an Assistant Professor of Zoology. Bill held several administrative positions at Maryland and after forty-one years (July 2014), he retired as an Emeritus faculty member in the Department of Biology. Bill held a part-time appointment as a Professor of Physiology at the University of Augusta – University of Georgia Medical Partnership Program from 2014 – 2016.
