Job

Staff Clinician

About the position

This position is located in the Medical Genetics & Genomic Medicine Training Program (MGGMTP), within the Division of Intramural Research, National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). NHGRI offers a three-year residency program in medical genetics that trains physicians to diagnose, manage and counsel patients with genetic disorders. The Medical Genetics Residency Program exposes students to rare genetic disorders that might not be seen in a more typical medical genetics program; emphasizes clinical research, one of the few programs to do so; and grants access to the vast resources at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and at other highly ranked medical institutions in the nation's capital. Participants gain broad experience in clinical and molecular genetics, metabolic diseases and cytogenetics.

The Director of Genetics Education (DGE) for the NHGRI Medical Genetics Training Programs plays a critical role in leading and overseeing all aspects of our ACGME-accredited programs. This key leadership position provides a unique opportunity to shape the future of medical genetics education within a dynamic and innovative healthcare environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Program Leadership and Administration:
  • Contribute to strategic direction and oversight for the training program, ensuring it meets the requirements of ABMGG, ACGME, and other governing entities.
  • Lead the development and implementation of the curriculum, including didactic sessions, clinical and laboratory rotations, and scholarly activities.
  • Oversee and evaluate the academic performance and progress of trainees.
  • Create effective learning opportunities for the program within the available budget and resources.
  • Represent the program at local, regional, and national meetings and conferences.

Trainee Education and Development:

  • Coordinate the didactic curriculum including trainee and faculty presentations and graduate courses offered through the Foundation for the Advancement of Education in Sciences (FAES) making changes and updates as necessary related to the growth of the program and field of genetics and genomics.
  • Lecture in all educational activities.
  • Prepare an updated annual supplementary in-training exam and biannual board review curriculum targeted to the ABMGG General Examination.
  • Foster a positive and supportive learning environment for trainees, promoting their professional and personal growth.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to residents on career development, research opportunities, and ethical considerations.

Faculty Development:

  • Recruit and retain qualified faculty to teach within the training program.
  • Provide ongoing faculty development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and expertise.
  • Foster a collaborative and collegial relationship with faculty members.
  • Research and Scholarly Activity:
  • Encourage and support trainee and faculty participation in research and scholarly activities.
  • Contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of medical genetics and genomics through publications and presentations.
  • Communication and Collaboration:
  • Maintain effective communication with program stakeholders, including trainees, faculty, institutional leadership, and external partners.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with collaborators within the institution and the wider genetics community
