Staff Scientist

The National Institute of Mental Health, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, is recruiting a Staff Scientist in the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology. LMCN investigates structure function relationships, pharmacology, cellular regulation and molecular interactions of the members of the SLC1 and the SLC6 families by using electrophysiological, cell biological, molecular genetic and biochemical techniques combined with transgenic animal models.

About the position

This position provides support with surgical manipulation of mice and rats using stereotaxic injection of viral vectors, implantation of cannulae and verification of correct placement. This position also contributes to a range of animal experiments conducted by the LMCN which includes, but is not limited to, procedures such as immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescent imaging, perfusions, injections, anesthesia, stereotaxic surgeries, and behavioral assays. The person in this position will work closely with our lab and the animal facility technicians and veterinarian in making sure that experimental endpoints are met, and that humane care is provided. This person will work closely with our other technical laboratory staff in managing case records for animals needing medical treatment, undergoing surgery or undergoing experimental procedures. This position is responsible for maintaining proficiency of in current procedures, as well as continued education and training in new procedures and techniques and training of staff members. The position is required to conduct all animal procedures without causing any undue stress to animals, while maintaining accurate records that document any animal distress, anesthesia administration, unexpected outcomes, and deviations from SOPs. The person will also be involved in administrative support duties.

Qualifications

Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. or M.D. in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Candidates will:

  • Be able to effectively follow Standard Operating Procedures as it relates to Environmental Health and Safety procedures (i.e. proper use of Personal Protective Equipment).
  • Have excellent organization, problem-solving, and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Be ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities to achieve desired goals.
  • Be able to keep clear, complete and accurate records.
  • Be proficient in using Mac and PC operating systems as well as Microsoft Office, and have familiarity with biomedical research and animal models of disease.
