The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases is now seeking a Staff Scientist position to join the Systemic Autoimmunity Branch in Bethesda, Maryland.
About the position
This staff scientist position is an exciting opportunity to join a highly-collaborative and internationally-recognized research team focused on uncovering the mechanisms that drive systemic autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis, and related disorders.
The Systemic Autoimmunity Branch conducts cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical research to understand the immunologic, genetic, and environmental factors that contribute to autoimmune disease pathogenesis. Investigators within our Branch integrate laboratory discovery with patient-based research to improve diagnosis, identify therapeutic targets, and advance precision medicine approaches.

As such, SAB is seeking an accomplished and motivated scientist with expertise in autoimmune disease immunology to contribute to the design, execution, and management of our innovative research programs. This Staff Scientist will work both independently on complex scientific projects and collaboratively with investigators across NIH.
This Title 42(g) position and does not include independent principal investigator status or independent resources. Key responsibilities of this position include:
- Designing and conducting research studies focused on mechanisms of systemic autoimmunity, including immune dysregulation, inflammation, and tissue injury
- Developing advanced immunologic, molecular, and computational approaches
- Analyzing complex datasets derived from human subjects, model systems, and in vitro studies
- Contributing to translational research initiatives, including biomarker discovery and therapeutic target identification
- Collaborating with clinical investigators to integrate laboratory findings with patient-based research
- Preparing scientific manuscripts, reports, and presentations
- Mentoring trainees and provide technical guidance to junior staff
- Contributing to laboratory operations and strategic scientific planning
- Serving as a scientific resource in autoimmune disease biology and immunology
This position is located on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland, one of the world’s leading biomedical research centers. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Qualifications
Prospective applicants must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in Immunology, Rheumatology, Molecular Biology, and/or a related biomedical field. Applicants should also have a demonstrated expertise in autoimmune disease research and/or human immunology. A strong record of peer-reviewed publications and experience with modern immunological and molecular techniques is required. Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment, are also required. Preferably, candidates will have 4–5 years of postdoctoral research experience working with human samples. Expertise in single-cell RNA sequencing, systems immunology, or multi-omics integration, plus bioinformatics, computational biology, and/or statistical analysis of large datasets, is welcome but not required. Demonstrated project leadership and mentoring experience is a plus.
